Indonesia EarthQuake

indonesia earthquake map
Sunday, Nov. 16 2008: A massive 7.5-magnitude earthquake struck eastern Indonesia, a popular surfing travel destination, early Monday morning local time, according to the U.S. Geological Survey, sparking a brief tsunami warning for coastline areas within 1,000 kilometres of the epicentre.

(Click on Indonesia Map to enlarge)

The tremor hit at 12:02 PM ET, striking about 135 kilometres northwest of Gorontalo, Sulawesi, one of the four largest islands of Indonesia.

The quake and subsequent tsunami warning, which has since been lifted, caused residents to flee nearby coastal towns.

However, there are no immediate reports of injuries or damage.

Indonesia's local geological survey measured the earthquake at a monstrous 7.7.

Indonesia's location along the so-called 'Ring of Fire,' an area of volcanoes and fault lines in the Pacific Basin, makes it particularly vulnerable to earthquakes.

It was a 9.1-magnitude earthquake, the fourth-largest in more than 100 years, that hit the Indonesian island of Sumatra in December 2004.

The earthquake and subsequent tsunami, which affected 14 countries, killed more than 200,000 people and displaced nearly 1.7 million others.

Thursday, Sept. 11, 2008: Kelly Slater wins the 2008 Boost Mobile Pro of Surfing over Taj Burrow in one of the most exciting 40 minute heats in Pro Surfing history.

The 16 remaining surfers in the Globe Pro Fiji will enjoy their third day off in paradise, today’s competition has been called off citing swell on the horizon.

“We're focused on a great finish to what has already been a really good event and right now we're preparing for a perfect six foot (two metre) high swell to arrive at Cloudbreak around Sunday or Monday, maybe Tuesday,” Contest Director Steve Robertson said. “Let’s face it, these final 16 surfers are in a high pressure situation and Globe want a classic finish.
